Why Nockchain
What is Nockchain?
Nockchain represents a novel approach to blockchain technology - a scalable Layer 1 purpose-built for zero-knowledge proofs. It functions as a settlement layer for NockApps using a UTXO transaction model that supports arbitrary intents.
Like Bitcoin, Nockchain relies on proof-of-work with 100% of $NOCK tokens distributed to miners. The key difference: Nockchain's computational work isn't wasted. Miners generate zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) proving correct transaction execution via NockVM.
Technical Differentiation
NockVM Performance
NockVM delivers order-of-magnitude performance improvements over leading RISC-V zkVMs. The Turing-complete system achieves 121 bits of security over the Goldilocks field while being significantly more efficient than general-purpose alternatives.
The zkPoW Flywheel
Nockchain's core innovation is the zkPoW flywheel mechanism:
- $NOCK incentivizes miners to compete intensely
- Competition drives NockVM prover optimizations

NockApps: Beyond Traditional Applications
NockApps function similarly to rollups or subnets - execution occurs off-chain in environments that compile to NockVM. Currently supporting Hoon (Urbit's language) and Jock (a Swift-like language), NockVM can potentially become a compilation target for other VMs and languages including RISC-V, EVM, and WASM.
Early NockApps will include familiar applications like lending markets, swaps, and stablecoins. However, the design space extends far beyond traditional DeFi as programmability matures.
$NOCK Token Economics
Fair Launch Distribution
100% of $NOCK supply is distributed via block rewards to miners, avoiding insider-heavy allocations common in other Layer 1 projects. This creates one of the few genuinely credibly neutral tokens in the market.
Fixed Supply Model
Supply is capped at 2³² tokens with a front-loaded issuance schedule. No hidden inflation or governance-based policy changes position $NOCK closer to Bitcoin's monetary policy than perpetually inflating alternatives.
Proof-Demand Linkage
As miners optimize the prover and proofs become cheaper, the design space for NockApps expands, driving increased demand for proofs and, by extension, $NOCK. The token functions as both a store of value and an active unit of account for zero-knowledge proofs.
Current Network Status
The network has been operational since May 2025, with organic community formation including OTC trading groups and community-driven development projects like wallets and infrastructure tools.
Programmability Upgrade (October 2025)
Zorp shipped a major protocol upgrade on October 17th, which went into effect at block 39,000. This upgrade was the precondition for the Base bridge and established a clear path for future programmability upgrades. It included:
- Shorter addresses and SegWit
- Lock scripts and Hash Time Locked Contracts (HTLCs)
- A new transaction engine enabling non-protocol-breaking upgrades
This was a breaking change requiring significant coordination, demonstrating commitment from all infrastructure partners and miners. The successful upgrade has accelerated the timeline for official Nockchain protocol governance.
Supply Dynamics
The second halvening occurred on October 27th, cutting the block reward from 32k to 16k $NOCK. Combined with increased proofrate difficulty, this has shifted supply dynamics significantly:
- Short-term miners forced off the network due to higher cost basis
- More $NOCK concentrated in long-term holder hands
- Mining competition driving prover optimizations (the zkPoW Flywheel in action)
ZK Proof Production
Today Nockchain is producing more zero-knowledge proofs than all of the rest of crypto combined, demonstrating the network's technical capabilities and mining ecosystem health.
Ecosystem Development
Zorp
Zorp is the core developer behind Nockchain, stewarding governance and protocol development. Key ecosystem partners include Southwestern Pool Supply (SWPS) and Nockbox, with active development continuing on the primary GitHub repository.
Mining Ecosystem
Mining distribution and network health are critical metrics for long-term sustainability. Through the October price action and into the halvening, proofrate went vertical, showing strong mining competition and network security.
Developer Activity
Community-built tooling including dashboards, wallets, and applications demonstrates growing developer interest. The NockApp SDK release will enable developers to build applications leveraging Nockchain's fast and cheap ZKPs.

Currently, $NOCK trading is primarily through OTC channels and Safetrade exchange. While orderbook depth has grown (handling up to $10M daily volume at peak), the market remains thin compared to more established tokens. The Base bridge and Aerodrome pool will significantly expand access once live.
Early Development Stage
As a young network (launched May 2025), Nockchain faces typical early-stage risks including technical challenges, ecosystem development requirements, and the need to attract developers and users. The successful programmability upgrade and Foundation formation demonstrate progress on these fronts.
Competitive Landscape
